Anxiety Treatment Gold Coast

Anxiety is the body's natural response to stress or perceived threat, but for many people it becomes persistent, intense or hard to switch off. It can show up as constant worry, a racing heart, tension, restlessness, trouble sleeping, or avoiding situations that feel overwhelming. Anxiety is one of the most common mental health concerns in Australia, and it can affect work, relationships and everyday life. It is also well understood, and there are evidence-based psychological treatments that many people find helpful.

At listeningloudly psychology in Varsity Lakes, our Clinical Psychologists work with adults across the Gold Coast and Australia via telehealth who are living with generalised anxiety, panic attacks, social anxiety, health anxiety and specific phobias. Whether your worry has been building quietly for years or arrived suddenly after a stressful period, therapy can help you understand what is keeping it going and give you practical ways to respond differently.

Signs and symptoms

Anxiety looks different from person to person, and you may notice some of the signs below more than others.

  • Persistent worry: Thoughts that keep circling around "what if" and are hard to switch off, even when things seem fine.

  • Racing heart or tight chest: A pounding heartbeat, shortness of breath or chest tightness, often during stress or for no clear reason.

  • Muscle tension: Aching shoulders, a clenched jaw or a body that feels constantly on guard.

  • Restlessness: Feeling on edge, keyed up or unable to settle, even when you have time to rest.

  • Trouble sleeping: Difficulty falling asleep, waking in the night, or lying awake with a busy mind.

  • Difficulty concentrating: Your mind goes blank or struggles to stay on one task because worry takes up the space.

  • Avoiding situations: Steering clear of places, people or tasks that bring on anxious feelings, which can shrink your life over time.

  • Panic attacks: Sudden waves of intense fear, often with a pounding heart, dizziness, shaking or a sense of losing control.

  • Irritability: Feeling short-tempered or easily overwhelmed, especially when you are already stretched.

  • Fatigue: Feeling drained from the effort of worrying, even when you have not done much.

How therapy helps and what to expect at listeningloudly

Therapy for anxiety usually moves through stages, and we adjust the pace to suit you.

Getting to know you

In your first sessions we talk through what you are experiencing, what has helped or hasn't, and what you would like to change.

Understanding you

Together we map out what triggers and maintains your anxiety, so the patterns make sense and have a clear starting point.

Building practical skills

You learn and practise evidence-based strategies for worry, physical tension and avoidance, tailored to your life.

Making it last

We review your progress, plan for setbacks and build on what is working, so you can keep using the skills after therapy ends.

Frequently asked questions

When should I see a psychologist for anxiety?

It can help to talk to someone when anxiety is affecting your sleep, work, relationships or daily routine, or when avoiding things has started to shrink your life. You don't need to wait until it feels unmanageable. If you're unsure, a first appointment is a chance to talk it through and decide what, if anything, would help.

Do I need a referral to see a psychologist for anxiety?

You don't need a referral to book with a psychologist. However, a GP can prepare a Mental Health Treatment Plan (often called a Mental Health Care Plan), which allows you to claim Medicare rebates on a set number of sessions each calendar year. Your GP can tell you whether you're eligible.

Can anxiety be treated by telehealth?

Yes. Many people have therapy for anxiety by secure video from home, and it can suit people who live outside the Gold Coast or find travel difficult. Face-to-face sessions are also available in Varsity Lakes if you prefer to meet in person.

listeningloudly offers expert and compassionate clinical psychology services for most concerns and difficulties, including anxiety, depression, trauma, relationships, life transitions, self-esteem, work and employment issues.
